CERRI's History

Community-led. Land-based. Knowledge-driven.

Our History

The Chisasibi Eeyou Resource and Research Institute (CERRI) was created to support community-led research rooted in Eeyou knowledge, lived experience, and respect for the land. Based in Chisasibi, CERRI works to strengthen the connection between people, culture, and the environment by supporting research that is practical, ethical, and meaningful to the community.

CERRI was established to create a local space where research could be guided by community priorities rather than outside agendas. From the beginning, the institute has focused on blending Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) with Western science, ensuring that Elders, youth, land users, and local experts all have a voice in shaping research projects.

Over time, CERRI’s work has grown to include environmental monitoring, food sovereignty initiatives, and community education. One of its most visible projects is the geodesic greenhouse dome, which serves as both a research site and a learning space. The dome supports agriculture research in a northern climate while providing fresh produce, hands-on workshops, and opportunities for community members of all ages to learn from seed to harvest.

CERRI continues to evolve alongside the community, responding to emerging environmental changes and local needs. By training local researchers, partnering with schools and organizations, and supporting youth leadership, CERRI remains committed to building capacity within Chisasibi and ensuring that research benefits the land and the people who depend on it.

Today, CERRI stands as a community-driven institute grounded in respect, collaboration, and long-term stewardship of Eeyou Istchee.
