In Fall 2023, I embarked on a life-changing journey as one of five students from Chisasibi accepted into McGill University’s STEM Foundations program. This opportunity felt both exciting and daunting, but I was eager to take on the challenge and grow both academically and personally. Today, as I reflect on this incredible experience, I’m filled with gratitude and pride for all that we accomplished.
The program began with Essential Communication Skills and the Basic Concepts of Math & Science, which provided a strong foundation to ease us into the coursework. Initially, the material felt manageable, but as the seasons progressed, the intensity of the program increased. By Winter 2024, we were tackling the Fundamentals of Physics and the Foundations of Mathematics—subjects that tested my problem-solving skills and patience. Despite the challenges, I found myself growing more confident with each step forward.

When Summer 2024 arrived, we delved into the Foundations of General Biology and General Chemistry, followed by the Foundations of Statistics. These courses were not only academically rigorous but also deeply enriching. They helped me understand the intricate systems that govern our world and solidified my interest in pursuing higher education in science.
What truly made this journey special was the support system around me. My fellow students and I formed a bond that carried us through late study sessions and moments of doubt. Our teachers played an equally significant role, always encouraging us to push our limits. One teacher, in particular, made a lasting impression by showing a willingness to learn our Cree language. This gesture of cultural respect motivated me and reminded me that education is a two-way street—a space where learning and understanding go both ways.

The highlight of this experience was the Graduation Ceremony at Montreal’s Place des Arts on December 2, 2024. Standing on that stage, I felt an overwhelming sense of accomplishment. It was more than just a diploma; it was proof that hard work and perseverance could open doors to new possibilities. For me, this moment felt like a dream come true and reinforced my determination to continue my educational journey.
Looking back, I realize how much this program has shaped me—not just academically, but as a person. It taught me resilience, the value of community, and the importance of believing in myself. As I move forward, I carry the lessons and memories of this incredible journey with me, ready to face whatever comes next.
To anyone considering a path like this, my advice is simple: don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. The road may be challenging, but the rewards are worth every effort.
To my fellow McGill University STEM graduates of 2024: we did it! Thank you for being a part of this journey and for making it so memorable. I’m excited to see where life takes us next.
